For DJ X-Wing, alias Marius Rüfenacht, it all began in the early 1980s – in the midst of the burgeoning hip-hop scene. There he discovered his passion for mixing and developed a keen sense of rhythm, groove, and audience energy. Initially, he was firmly rooted in hip-hop culture, but with the emergence of electronic music in the late 1980s, a new and fascinating world of sound opened up for him.
From hip-hop to acid and techno to progressive, his musical journey eventually led him to the style that still defines him today: trance. DJ X-Wing found his true artistic home in this genre—a style of music in which emotion, energy, and depth merge into a hypnotic experience.
From 1993 onwards, DJ X-Wing was a regular fixture at parties and on the radio—including Radio Rabe, and later Channel K, Radio X, and Trance X-Press. His sets were characterized by precise dramaturgy, smooth transitions, and an unmistakable passion for atmospheric sound journeys. He was resident DJ at the legendary after-hours club Es-Ex and later at the Ex-Club (Love Zoo) in Thun—places where nights became journeys through sound and emotion.
His first major bookings took him to well-known events such as Robots I + II, the Tunnel Trance parties in Jaberg, Oxa and Grafitti, the Street Parade, Swiss Camp Nature One, the Orange Club Stuttgart and many other hotspots on the European scene.
In addition to his performances, X-Wing also organized numerous events himself, including the successful party series The End is Near, X-Wing Night, The Dreams Continue, World of Happiness, Anomalie, and Space of Happiness—all expressions of his creative vision and commitment to the scene.
Through an appearance on DJ Substance's Rave Star, he met DJ Sakin, who offered him the opportunity to remix the track Only Feelings in 2014 – another milestone in his career.
Over the years, DJ X-Wing has developed his own distinctive style: driving, atmospheric, emotional, and always full of heart and soul. Anyone who has ever seen him live immediately senses his deep connection to music—his sets are more than just mixes, they are moments of immersion, journeys through soundscapes that captivate and move the audience.
One thing is certain: we will be hearing more from DJ X-Wing – because for him, music is not a trend, but a way of life.
